Football legend Diego Maradona remained in hospital for alcoholic detoxification, two days after being admitted, with a psychiatric nurse by his side, the hospital director said.

“Maradona remains under treatment with sedatives, … and support medications. There have been new routine tests, which have shown acceptable results,” Hector Pezzella, the medical chief at Guemes Hospital, told reporters.

Pezzella said that while Maradona, 46, was “fully into a period of recovery,” he was drowsy given the sedatives he has been receiving “to avoid withdrawal symptoms.”
“He is stable and is progressing very well … he did wake up and he ate breakfast,” Pezzella added, noting that eating on his own was a sign of progress.

Glenn McGrath believes no side will threaten Australia in their push for a third successive World Cup, provided the defending champions keep up their current form.
McGrath, who is poised to become the leading wicket-taker in World Cup history, said Australia had the ability to win every match in the tournament, as they did in 2003.
“If we go and play the way we have I can’t really see any team getting close to us,” he told AFP. “In any Australian sport it seems that attitude is carried right across the board,” he added.

McGrath said his confidence was genuine, like when he correctly tipped a 5-0 win in the Ashes a few months ago.
“I don’t say anything I don’t believe,” he said. “We’ve been so successful over such a long time, we know how to win, what we’ve to do,” he explained.
He said the experience within the squad was a major factor in their belief. McGrath and Ricky Ponting have each played in the last three World Cup finals, Adam Gilchrist in the last two, while Andrew Symonds, Brad Hogg and Matthew Hayden also tasted success in the 2003 decider.
“When you walk on the field you just have to look around you, the guys that are walking with you,” McGrath said. “There are some amazing players, some of the greats of all time. It does give you a lot of confidence,” he added.
McGrath has 54 World Cup wickets from his four campaigns and is one short of Wasim Akram’s tournament record. However, McGrath said winning a third successive title with his teammates was his main aim.
“Guys like Wasim are sort of heroes of mine,” McGrath said. “He is known as one of the best bowlers of all time. To finally go past him, if I get a couple of more wickets, that would be something special. It’s nice to get little milestones along the way but they are not the be-all and end-all,” he added.
McGrath, who is farewelling international cricket after the World Cup, said he had no regrets about retiring and spending more time with his wife Jane, who has had cancer and a brain tumour.
“If it was just about playing, I think I could continue all the time,” he said.
“It’s everything else that goes with it. The travel, the training, you name it, the time away from Jane and the kids. So I’ve been lucky enough to have 14 years at the top level so it’s my turn to move on,” he added.
McGrath has the chance to break Wasim’s record when Australia take on Bangladesh here in Antigua on Saturday (today). Should Australia win it will be their 17th consecutive victory in World Cup matches.

It can only happen in Pakistan. The most high-profile sportsmen of the country flop miserably in the most high-profile event -ñ the Cricket World Cup. The chief of the board running the sport resigns, accepting responsibility for the disaster but is asked to continue by the ‘chief patron’ some days later.
The farce continues. The board’s chief – Dr Nasim Ashraf – willingly reaccepts the responsibility of putting his team back on track, expecting everything would somehow fall in to place. He promises to come out with ‘short and long-term rebuilding plans for Pakistan cricket shortly’.
If millions of cricket fans back home are still hoping cricket would make a big turnaround in Pakistan, they should go for some serious mental check-ups.
With the decision to retain the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) set-up, in the wake of the Pakistan cricket’s darkest episode, the future of the sport in this sports-mad country seems doomed.
It is crystal clear that the current PCB set-up is ill-equipped to pull Pakistan cricket out of its latest crisis. An organisation, they say, is only as strong as its weakest link. It is unfortunate, but in the case of PCB the weakest link is its top boss.
By opting to continue as PCB chairman, Ashraf has proved that he would stick to the position at any cost event if his own integrity was at stake. Can such a man lead Pakistan cricket out of its worst nightmare?
The worst part is that almost everybody knew where things were going when Ashraf announced his resignation when Pakistan were sent packing out of the World Cup by minnows Ireland. Initially, he tried to brave the storm by promising drastic measures to resurrect Pakistan cricket.
But in the face of some stingy attacks, Ashraf resigned. A few people may have believed he meant it. Most, however, did not. After all, they had seen it happening in the past. In 2003, former PCB chairman General Tauqir Zia staged a similar drama after the Pakistan team’s performance graph nosedived to abysmal depths but his resignation, too, was aimed at assuaging public outrage and was subsequently turned down by President Musharraf.
Everything was theatrical about Ashraf’s resignation too. Even after stepping down as PCB chairman, Ashraf, who it seems was aware that he would be asked to continue, remained busy in giving media interviews and never gave any indication that he really wanted to quit.
Ashraf, a man hand-picked to lead Pakistan cricket in the aftermath of The Oval fiasco, now says that he would rebuild Pakistan cricket. The question is not whether he is capable to do it but why should this gentleman be allowed to take up such an important job in the first place. He has no credentials and in his first six months as PCB chairman has done Pakistan cricket more harm than good.
He has been unable to form a solid team of officials around him, allowed player power to take destructive shape and committed a series of blunders that led to Pakistan’s shocking World Cup exit.
Under Ashraf, the best example of the worst sort of handling of an important issue was the doping scandal of Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif.
In October, the Board initially tried to cover up the fact that Shoaib and Asif tested positive for banned anabolic steroid nandrolone. But it took a u-turn when the story was leaked to the media by an inside source.
The Board formed an inquiry committee that later banned the pace duo after finding them guilty of doping offences. The verdict came almost five months before the World Cup and Pakistan should have started looking beyond the two strike bowlers.
But instead, the PCB worked behind the scenes to get the players off the hook. A PCB appeals committee cleared the players and a race began to make Shoaib and Asif available for the World Cup. They were even included in the 15-man World Cup squad even though it was quite clear that the players were unlikely to pass dope tests as they were still carrying traces of nandrolone in their bloodstream.
Just before the departure of the Pakistan team to the Caribbean, Shoaib and Asif were pulled out of the squad but once again the Board did not come out with the truth. Instead, it was announced that the players have been withdrawn because of injuries.
Pakistan never managed to overcome the setback and lost successive World Cup games against the West Indies and Ireland to slip out of the race for Super Eight qualification.
It is highly unlikely that the Board, under Ashraf, would not commit more blunders in the future.
Pakistan failed to learn when their team was sent packing out of the 2003 World Cup and they have failed to learn from this fresher setback. Cricket, it is apparent, would remain in trouble in a place where it is followed as a religion, in the days to come.

Pakistan’s quitting cricket captain Inzamam-ul-Haq while turning down match fixing allegations in the World Cup Saturday accepted responsibility of the national team’s defeat in the tournament.

In first press conference at Gaddafi Stadium here after the team’s return to home, Inzamam said that the team’s bad performance caused the debacle but the national press should have supported the team at this worst time of Pakistan cricket.

Replying a question about new coach he said it is the board’s responsibility to take decision. He said the coach either foreigner or Pakistani, must be capable enough to meet the challenge.

The outgoing captain turned down match fixing allegations as baseless and also termed criticism over the selectors uncalled for.

He said he was disappointed with the team’s defeat in the cup but also frustrated with let down by our own people.

Responding to question about the new captain of the national team, Inzamam said Vice Captain Younis Khan should be offered captaincy of the team.

It must be mentioned that from the original star cast that comprised of six lead protagonists, only Sanjay Dutt and Suneil Shetty have been so far confirmed. With Arjun signed on for the film, it only adds on to the hunk brigade. One also tends to believe that Kumar Gaurav would be a certain inclusion to this Sanjay Gupta film since he was the only man who was shown to walk out alive in the film’s climax.

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar may sue a UK tabloid for slander against Shilpa Shetty and giving personal details of her past relationship with him. After winning ‘Big Brother’ in the UK, the British media have suddenly taken a keen interest in Shilpa and her life and there have been several stories and articles published by various tabloids in the UK on her.

Some sleazy tabloids have chronicled the personal details of Shilpa’s life. Recently the various legal controversies that Shilpa and her parents have been surrounded in were written about. But a few days ago, a UK tabloid Newsoftheworld stooped to the lowest level, giving personal details of Shilpa’s past relationship with ex-boyfriend Akshay.

Although Shilpa has decided to keep a dignified silence on the issue, Akshay has decided to sue the tabloid.

Aamir Khan starrer Ghajini has two heroines as in the original version. Aamir and Murugadoss had initially decided to keep Asin as one of the heroines. She had also acted in the Tamil version and was also reasoned to be one of the key factors for the film’s success. But then The Fanaa star then decided to do away with her.
